Rt. Rev. PD Dr. Joseph Mar Ivanios Episcopa was born on 19 August 1970 to Karamvelimannil Sri. Thomas Daniel and Smt. Saramma Thomas of Kochukoickal Trinity Mar Thoma Parish.

Biography

He studied history at St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry and Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta, where he earned a first rank and university gold medal before beginning theological studies at the Mar Thoma Theological Seminary in Kottayam.

After receiving his B.D. in 1998, he was ordained as Semmash in June 1998 and Kassessa in July 1998. He later completed an M.Th. in the History of Christianity in 2006 and went on to earn a D.Th. from the University of Bern in 2014. His postdoctoral research was completed in 2024, followed by Habilitation in Church History at the University of Bern.

His ministry has included service as chaplain to the then Metropolitan Dr. Alexander Mar Thoma, teaching at E.J. Institute Kompady and Mar Thoma Theological Seminary, and parish work in Mylom, K.R. Puram, Marathalli, Bangalore, Singapore, Switzerland, Germany and Kumbanad.

He has represented the Church in ecumenical spaces such as the WCC and CCA, served on the Policy Reference Committee of the WCC Karlsruhe Assembly in 2022, and now serves as Privatdozent at the Christkatholisches Institute, University of Bern, and as Professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.

He also teaches at the Mar Thoma Theological Seminary and F.F.R.C., Kottayam, is a Senate Member of Serampore University, and serves on several church and academic bodies across India, Singapore, Malaysia and Europe.

His books include works on church history, ecumenism and Mar Thoma ecclesiology, reflecting the historical and theological focus that shapes his ministry.
